Rostrato

The Rostrato is an artistic technique of blown glass from Murano characterized by its surface covered with small spikes or protrusions in the shape of a peak (face in Italian).

Main characteristics

  1. Origin: It was invented, patented, and presented at the Venice Biennale in 1938 by the master designer Ercole Barovier for the prestigious glassmaker Barovier & Toso.
  2. Handcrafted production: While the glass is molten and hot, the master glassmaker uses special tongs or scissors to pinch and pull the glass outward quickly before it cools, creating small crests or prisms reminiscent of diamond or Renaissance bugnato.
  3. Light effect: Its faceted design allows it to capture, refract, and project light uniquely from the inside out.
